As part of the Howdy Modi program Republic TV spoke to the Mayor of Houston city, Sylvester Turner, ahead of the ‘Howdy, Modi’ event that will take place in the city on Sunday. The Mayor spoke about the relationship between India and the city of Houston and especially the cultural linkages. When asked about his views on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Mayor said that “He became the Prime Minister in 2014 and everyone watched him rise, His involvement goes way back.” He went on to speak about Modi’s reforms.
Houston Mayor: ‘India a global international player’
The Mayor also spoke about reforms the Modi Government took up for building ‘global international relations’.
When asked about the presence of the large Indian community in the United States, the Mayor said: “Houston is a global international city but you can’t feel that unless you make strong ties with a global international player like India.” Turner also spoke about relations between India and the city of Houston, saying “We respect the fact that India is Houston’s fourth-leading trading partner, but we also want to grow on that. There are a lot of synergies between India and Houston.”
‘India-Houston share a good relationship’
He also spoke about educational reforms India has taken up, saying “The largest university in Houston is run by an Indian, even from an academic point of view there are some strong ties.” He added that “India and Houston share a good relationship, there’s a lot of room for it to be expanding. The very fact that he chose the city of Houston shows the significance Houston plays between India and the United States.”
Howdy Modi the largest gathering of Indian-Americans
The Howdy Modi event will be the largest gathering of Indian-Americans. The event that has been organised by the Texas India Forum (TIF) will be filled to capacity with 50,000 people registering to fill Houston’s NRG Stadium. It aims at highlighting the contributions of Indian-Americans in strengthening ties between the two countries. United States President Donald Trump will also be attending the event. A large number of officials, senators, governors, congressmen and business leaders are also expected to participate..
