Kannur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s advice to engage in doing something constructive during the 21 days lockdown period, motivated a family in Kannur, Kerala, to dig a well for themselves. As the anticipated high costs of digging and constructing a well had discouraged them, keeping it as a dream for them.
However, the lockdown changed everything. Shaneesh and his elder brother decided to dig a well of their own without spending money on labour. The first person who came out in support of them was none other than Shaneesh’s sister-in-law. His brother’s son Appu and daughter Chinjumol, chipped in and the team was ready to go.
If the family had hired labourers for the job, it would cost up to Rs.1 lakh for their dream well to come into reality. But instead, the family joined hands to do it by themselves.
Shaneesh gives a beautiful description of how each member of his family went through hardships to get the job done.
His sister-in-law and the children were inexperienced in manual labour but that did not prevent them from doing the job with gusto.
Shaneesh’s sister-in-law’s effort got special applause from everyone. She went down the hole to dig and collect dirt and mud. Then the brothers pulled her up by rope and the mud was carried by the children to be dumped on the other side of the land.
After days of hard labour and persistence, the family stuck water. Shaneesh thanked everyone for their moral support. He also said that mother Earth has blessed the family with water, which was their dream.
Here is the Facebook post by Shaneesh (in Malayalam), which went viral and various radio and TV channels in Kerala covered this story. You can view the inspiring videos below.
